COVID-19 The Corona Virus - Mass Hysteria or Real Threat?
COVID-19 Mass hysteria or threat?
What is it what divides our society?
On one hand, these are the intense quarantine orders, the lock downs in cities and States, closures of businesses and required social distance. On the other hand, these are the mass hysteria and social media posts saying, it is all a hoax and the corona virus is not dangerous. There are posts saying, if we wouldn’t have tests to find the corona virus, we wouldn’t even know there is a pandemic. With other words, there would be no virus and we would just move on with life.
In 2009, we had the outbreak of the swine flu. The CDC estimates were that from April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010 approximately 60.8 million cases, 274,304 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths occurred in the United States.
Every year, we deal with the flu season. The CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died.
And then, there is the corona virus (COVID-19). Today, March 21st, we have about 25,000 cases in the USA with about 300 deaths…… so, what is the point? Now lets do the math. In 2 weeks, the estimated number of COVID-19 cases is about 4,000,000. About 5% of the infected people need intensive care and be ventilated. 5% of 4,000,000 is 200,000…. 200,000 people who would need IC units and be ventilated with 18,600 available ICU beds and 10,000 available ventilators! Or in other words, we would reach the maximum to provide intensive care in 6-7 days!!! With that said, the heath system would collapse in 6-7 days!
Now, according to the WHO (World Health Organization) Covid-19 the corona virus has actually a 14 times higher deaths rate then the common flu! New research suggests COVID-19 is 20 times more deadly than the flu.
That said, scientists have studied seasonal flu for decades. So, despite the danger of it, we know a lot about flu viruses and what to expect each season. In contrast, very little is known about the new coronavirus and the disease it causes, dubbed COVID-19, because it's so new. This means COVID-19 is something of a wild card in terms of how far it will spread and how many deaths it will cause Now, I hope EVERYONE understands why social distancing, quarantines and lock downs are important. And, of course, WASH YOUR HANDS!
